Prisoner on the hell planet a case history, Artie explains more of what happened with his mothers suicide, he tells us how she killed her self and tells us about the nigh it happened and days after. Artie feels guilty for his mothers suicide and you can tell he feels guilty before he even says he does because in one of the first panels he is standing like he is about to take a mug shot. I found it interesting that this section of the book used humans instead of mice, I feel like you can see more emotions and feeling in the faces of the humans and if they were mouse it wouldn't have the same affect. The pictures in this section make what he is saying very powerful. by how he makes the people look and how their words come out in their facial expressions. You can tell how bad he feels and how much he feels like it is his fault even though he tells you you can see it in his face clothes and the backgrounds where he is in jail at one point. you can also see how bad his father is handling the situation and how he is falling apart by his facial expression.

  1. I also liked how this section of the book used people for the characters instead of mice. It does show more emotion and and also makes the comic kind of creepy. The story of how is mother died is sad and it is also unfortunate how many people blamed artie for her death and how he also calls out to his mother at the end, calling her a murderer.

  2. Your completely right and I also like how he put himself in a convict uniform and was behind bars. I felt like that symbolized how he was a prisoner in his own mind and he succumbs to his own guilt and blames himself. But Cecily did you ever think that maybe he was referring to his dad when Artie said Murderer at the end? I feel like it was more aimed towards his dad because he destroyed all of anja's diary's and anything relating to her so he completely destroyed any memory of her.

  3. I think what Cecily meant was when Artie calls her a murderer at the end of the comic, "Prisoner on the Hell Planet"; not the end of the book. I agree with all of you in saying that the human drawings showed more emotion than the mice. I think that the author/illustrator did this on purpose to show the agony in her death. I think he also drew them as humans to bring us back to reality, to remind us that this happened to people and this was a true story for many who survived. I agree that this particular part in the novel was very creepy, mostly due to the body language and faces of the characters. You can tell that Artie's mom is depressed and he and Vladek are torn apart after she dies without the need of written words.

  4. I definatly agree with the idea that people are a much better choice for this portion of the novel. I never even saw it from like this before, but once brought to my attention I can definately say I agree. It's a lot more powerful and is much better at portraying the emotions of the characters.
